Window damage / A decision checklist

Glass Repair or Window Replacement? How to Choose

A damaged window can call for a small repair, new glass in the existing frame, or a complete replacement. This checklist helps you describe the problem and ask useful questions. A glazier needs to inspect the window before recommending a fix.

Broken glass or an unsecured opening? Keep people clear and avoid handling loose pieces. If the property cannot be secured, ask about emergency glass repair in Adelaide and whether a make-safe or board-up is needed. For immediate danger or serious injury, call Triple Zero (000).

First, separate the three possible jobs

Repair the existing window: If the glass is intact, the issue may be a seal, lock, roller or other part. A glazier can check whether fixing that part is enough. Replace the glass: A cracked or shattered pane may need new glass while a sound frame stays in place. A failed sealed glass unit may also be replaceable without changing the whole frame. Replace the whole window: If the frame or sash cannot reliably hold, close or secure the glass, a full window replacement may be the better option. These are possibilities, not a diagnosis from a photo.

Look at the damage without touching it

From a safe position, note whether the glass is cracked, missing, loose in the frame or fogged between panes. Say whether it is in a window, door or low-level panel and whether the opening faces weather or a public area. Location matters because the suitable glass can differ with how a window is used. Do not pull out a damaged pane or lean across broken glass to measure it.

Check the frame and operation

Tell the glazier if the window sticks, will not lock, lets in water or has a visibly bent, loose, soft or corroded frame. A sound frame may make glass-only replacement practical. A damaged frame can change the scope of the job, even when the broken pane is the most obvious problem. Repeated failures are also worth mentioning. Avoid forcing a window that will not move safely.

Ask what the inspection and quote will cover

Ask whether the quote is for a small repair, replacement glass or a complete window replacement. The glazier can check the frame, measure the opening and specify glass suited to its location, including any safety-glass requirements. Glass type, size, site access, frame work and any temporary make-safe can affect the scope and timing. Get those details in writing before deciding; a phone description alone cannot establish a price or compliance outcome.

What to share when you call

Give the suburb, the type of opening, what you can see from a safe distance and whether the property is secure. A photo may help if you can take it without approaching shards. Ask the glazier to compare the practical options after inspecting the window. For a broader explanation of repairs, hardware and full replacements, read our window repair versus replacement guide.
